Injury Severity Score (ISS) Calculation Formula

Injury severity score (ISS) is the combination of three most severely injured body regions have their score squared.

ISS Calculation Formula = Body Parts [5]2 + Body Parts [4]2 + Body Parts [3]2
  • [ ] value can be changed based on the severity of injury.

For example,
Let score the injury,
  • No injury = 0
  • Minor injury = 1
  • Moderate injury = 2
  • Serious injury = 3
  • Severe injury = 4
  • Critical injury = 5
  • Untreatable = 6

Now, if the body parts injury like below statement –
  • Head and Neck = minor (1)
  • Chest = moderate (2)
  • Abdomen = Serious (3)
  • Leg = Sever (4)
  • External = Moderate (2)

Then the Injury severity score will be = (4)2 + (3)2 + (2)2 = 29 points.

Note: Regional injury scores represent Abbreviated Injury Scale scores (AIS).
